[Sorry, no witty aliteration this time. I know, you're so bummed.]
Another good meeting was had last Monday (the 10th). The following items were discussed:
- Taylor and the Bordeauxs attended The University of Scouting event, which was reportedly a very neat experience where scouts gleaned valuable information and training in all things Venture. From this event, Taylor was inspired to spearhead efforts to organize a crew SUPER-ACTIVITY; more info on this can be found on the "Super-Activity" tab. :-)
- Our Venture Olympics are upon us!! Scheduled for Monday, May 31st (Memorial Day), the location of this awesome event is yet to be determined (more to come soon, so watch this space!!)
Y'all need to continue voting - there is one week left on our activity poll, and I have received 8 responses at the time of this post. If an activity you would like to do is not included in the options, PLEASE WRITE YOUR ACTIVITY AS A COMMENT ON THIS POST. So far, we have one "other" vote for Basketball, another excellent possibility. In short, keep an eye on the blog - final details on our day at the Olympics will be coming soon!!
- I am aware of the last-minute nature of this announcement, but nonetheless, I will inform you that the Boy Scout troop (668) is going on a La Jolla Cove Kayaking Trip. What's more, it's $35/person and is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday May 15th. Fantastic, right?! If you can go, contact Mike Barnes - get his info from Jim Bordeaux if you find yourself lacking it :-).
- There's a wonderful summer camp held at Fiesta Island down in San Diego, and you all should go! The deadline for this event is July 10th, so contact Jim Bordeaux expediently. (I am under the impression that this camp is called "Salty Rat", but I'm hoping I misheard, so don't quote me ;)
- Taylor and Earl have some animals (a pig and a turkey, I believe) that they will be showing this summer at the San Diego County Fair!! Let's go support our fellow crewmates, and maybe go on a couple of rides while we're at it. Earl and Taylor will be there from the last week of June through July 4th (Independence Day). More information to come on this, so come to the meeting and watch for updates here.
- Earl's Eagle Ceremony is THIS SUNDAY, May 16th, from 4-6pm at Light and Life church (contact Mr. B for directions). Acheiving Eagle is the highest rank in Boy Scouting, so this is kind of a big deal. ;) Go congratulate Earl (and maybe be in the Color Guard if you talk to Mr. B) and then celebrate with him at the after-party at the Bordeauxs'!!
- Lastly, we talked for a bit about emergency preparedness - you can never be too prepared, after all! The long and short of it is: keep a pair of shoes by your bed (you'll want them if there is an earthquake/fire/tornado/volcano eruption/alien invasion [just kidding] in the middle of the night); know how to turn your gas and water off; have emergency supplies close to the house, not inside; if you can access it, use all of that water in your water heater; and remember in the event of an earthquake to lay next to - not under - tables, beds, etc. This stuff could save your life, so keep it in mind, and be smart.

News! News! News!
Hey all,
We had a good meeting tonight [oops - last night!] during which a number of items were discussed. Here's some pertinent information for those who missed it [or could use a reminder :-)]...
--> First off, DUES. Yes, I know, grumble grumble grumble. The fact is, our crew dues are pretty reasonable - $3/month [or $36/year for you math whizzes]. Please bring these at the beginning of the month. Mitch, our illustrious Treasurer, will gladly collect them. These funds go towards expenses such as transportation, supplies, and other costs that arise in the crew. Fear not: your cash is being put to good use. :-)
--> Second, we heard great reports from the latest EVENTS, our Beach Bonfire Bash and the trip with the Boy Scouts to the Wind Caves. A good time was had by all, a theme which we hope carries over to all future outings!!
--> The Crew is organizing a FUNDRAISER at the local Applebee's restaurant, taking place tentatively on Sunday, May 30th (Memorial Day weekend). Here's how this works: 1) We print flyers with information from our crew and Applebee's. 2) We give these flyers to everyone we know. 3) On the date given, make sure everyone goes to the restaurant for lunch, dinner, whatever... and Applebee's gives us a percentage of the profit!! This is an easy and fun way to fundraise for the crew, so spread the word.
--> Saturday, May 8th = an event called the UNIVERSITY OF SCOUTING is taking place in San Diego. This program, held at the U. of Phoenix's San Diego campus, is designed to help shape scouts and crews to be more effective, and therefore rewarding. Topics include skills related to get your crew motivated, Venturing Awards, and lots more. Please contact Jim Bordeaux A.S.A.P. at JBorde8792@aol.com if you are at all interested.
--> Sunday, May 16th = Earl is having his EAGLE CEREMONY!! The event will take place at Light and Life from 4 to 6pm. A celebration following the ceremony will commence at the Bordeaux residence - e-mail Jim Bordeaux - address above - to R.S.V.P., and for directions. Come support and revel with your fellow crew member as he officially becomes an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in Boy Scouting. Congratulations, Earl!!
--> VENTURE OLYMPICS!! The crew is putting on a day of fun and 'friendly competition', complete with nerdy prizes. Games will include everything from Ultimate Frisbee to three-legged races and everything in between. We will have a poll on this site for y'all to put in your two cents about what games you'd like to see happen at the 1st Annual Crew 668 Venture Olympics! Info regarding exact time and location is forthcoming and will be posted soon... so watch this space.
Whew - I believe that's everything for now. Happy Venturing!
